Chiavari vs. Crossback Chairs for Weddings: Which Should You Rent?

Chiavari chairs and crossback chairs are the two most popular wedding chair rentals in DFW. Both look beautiful in photos — but they work best in different settings. Here is how to decide.

Chiavari Chairs

Chiavari chairs originated in 19th-century Italy and have been a wedding staple ever since. Their stackable design, tied cushions, and slim silhouette give any reception an air of elegance.

Best for:

  • Black-tie and formal receptions
  • Round table layouts with floor-length linens
  • Hotel ballrooms and indoor venues
  • Classic, timeless aesthetics

Gold chiavari is the most popular finish for weddings in the Frisco and Plano area. Silver pairs well with grey and white palettes. White chiavari chairs work beautifully for outdoor ceremonies against greenery.

The one trade-off: chiavari chairs are narrower and the seat is harder without a cushion. For a 4+ hour reception, adding a cushion (usually $1–$2 per chair extra) significantly improves guest comfort.

Crossback Chairs

Also called "cross-back," "cross back," or "farm chairs," these chairs feature an X-shaped back brace and a wide solid seat. They have a natural wood warmth that photographs especially well outdoors.

Best for:

  • Farm table layouts
  • Outdoor garden receptions and backyard weddings
  • Rustic-chic, boho, and earthy aesthetics
  • Mixed indoor/outdoor events

Crossback chairs are wider and more comfortable than chiavari chairs, which guests appreciate during long dinners. They work equally well without cushions, making them a slightly more economical choice.

The downside: they are heavier to move and do not stack as efficiently as chiavari chairs, which can affect setup logistics for large events.

How to Match Chairs to Tables

Round tables → Chiavari chairs. The elegant lines of a chiavari chair complement the formal circular table setting. Gold chiavari on round tables with ivory linens is one of the most timeless looks in event design.

Farm/harvest tables → Crossback chairs. The organic wood tone of a crossback chair naturally matches the raw wood of a farm table. This is the most photographed combination for outdoor DFW weddings.

Ghost/acrylic tables → Ghost chairs or clear chiavari. For ultra-modern spaces, clear chiavari chairs or acrylic chairs create a clean, architectural look.

Can You Mix Both?

Yes — and it looks intentional when done right. Many couples use crossback chairs at the dining tables and chiavari chairs for the ceremony seating, or vice versa. The key is to keep the finish consistent (natural wood crossback + natural wood farm tables) and avoid mixing metal finishes.
