How to Choose Wedding Linens: Colors, Fabrics, and Lengths
Linens transform a bare table into a polished focal point. The right combination of color, fabric, and length can make a $50 folding table look like it belongs at a five-star event. Here is how to choose well.
Step 1: Decide on Drop Length
"Drop" refers to how far the tablecloth hangs below the table edge.
Floor-length (full drop): The tablecloth grazes the floor, hiding the table legs completely. This is the most formal and elegant look. Required for most wedding receptions.
Lap-length (half drop): The cloth hangs roughly to guest knee height, showing the bottom half of the table legs. Common at casual parties and outdoor events.
For most weddings: Go floor-length. It photographs better, hides equipment and cords underneath, and signals "this is a real event."
Table and cloth size guide:
- 60-inch round table → 132-inch round cloth (floor-length)
- 60-inch round table → 120-inch round cloth (2-inch gap from floor — works on carpet)
- 8-foot farm table → 90×156 rectangular cloth (lap-length)
- 8-foot farm table → table runner only (no cloth — for raw wood tables)
Step 2: Choose a Fabric
Polyester: The workhorse of the event industry. Wrinkle-resistant, easy to launder, and affordable. Available in almost every color. Perfect for outdoor events where linens may get wind-blown or slightly dirty.
Satin or shantung: Has a subtle sheen that elevates photos. Slightly more expensive to rent. Best for indoor or tented events where the sheen catches venue lighting.
Linen/cotton blend: A matte, organic texture that is especially popular for farm table-style weddings. Pairs beautifully with wildflower centerpieces and natural wood.
Chiffon or organza overlays: Sheer fabric layers placed over a solid tablecloth for a layered, romantic look. Adds cost but creates a uniquely textured table.
Recommendation: Polyester for base tablecloths (cost-effective, durable), satin or linen overlay for head table and cake table where photos will be taken.
Step 3: Choose Colors
Ivory and white: The classic choice for weddings. Ivory is warmer and more forgiving in photos. White is crisp and modern but shows every shadow and wrinkle.
Blush and dusty rose: Extremely popular in DFW for spring and fall weddings. Pairs with gold chiavari chairs beautifully.
Sage and eucalyptus green: Trending heavily for outdoor and garden weddings in North Texas. Works with natural wood farm tables.
Navy: Elegant and dramatic for evening receptions. Pairs with gold accents.
Champagne/gold: Warm and luxurious. Especially beautiful under string lights or candlelight.
Tip: Request fabric swatches before you finalize your color. Colors on a screen often look different in person, especially under event lighting.
Step 4: Do Not Forget Napkins
Napkins are often an afterthought but they are one of the most visible linen items — every guest handles them. For a formal dinner, use a 20×20 inch napkin in a complementary or contrasting color. Fold them flat, in a fan, or tuck them into a wine glass.
Common napkin-to-tablecloth pairings:
- Ivory tablecloth + blush napkins
- White tablecloth + sage napkins
- Ivory tablecloth + gold napkins
- Champagne tablecloth + ivory napkins
Step 5: Coordinate Across All Tables
Your dining tables, head table, cake table, gift table, and bar table should feel cohesive. A simple rule: use the same base tablecloth on all tables, and reserve a specialty overlay or accent color for the head table and cake table to make them stand out.
